New Community recycling service to begin February 28

Household lightbulb disposal can be tricky depending on the type of bulb used in your home. Old fashioned incandescent bulbs can be thrown in the garbage provided they are wrapped in newspaper and taped  or a sealed bag to contain the glass. They are not recyclable.   Fluorescent tubes,  CFL bulbs ( compact fluorescent lightbulbs) and LED bulbs  are considered hazardous waste and may not be placed in any  bin in the trash enclosures at The Villages. They must be recycled through a hazardous waste site.

On a trial basis, once per month,  The Villages will be accepting a limited number of fluorescent, CFL, and LED light bulbs on a per household basis to be recycled.

Fluorescent Tubes – Up to four  feet long – unbroken – taped together – limit two per household.

CFL  bulbs (compact florescent lightbulbs)  – unbroken – sealed  in paper with tape  or in a sealed bag – limit four per household

LED bulbs – unbroken – sealed  in paper with tape or in a sealed bag – limit four  per household

The service will begin on Friday, February 28  (weather permitting) in conjunction with the household battery collection event in the parking lot near the tennis courts and air station between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Another option is to bring your florescent tubes and CFL’s to  Silver Creek Outdoor Supply Hardware at 1751 Capitol Expressway, San Jose.  Please contact them directly for hours and restrictions 669-699-5249.
