18 Hole Women shake off winter rustiness

By Loanne Rube

Cold and cloudy, threatening rain was the forecast. We were lucky to avoid the raindrops that are surely coming over the weekend and next week. Captain Helen Varenkamp and Director of Golf Scott Steele are thinking that it will be best in the near future for us to resume our shotgun at 8:30 a.m. because the bunker project allows for us to be playing 17 holes. Helen will blast out the shotgun start time when it changes to 8:30 a.m., so check your email. Until then, we play at 9 a.m.

It was a terrific day for golf. We are shaking off that winter rust and honing our putting strokes to get to lower scores. Birdies were enjoyed by Vicki Krattli #9, Janis LeCompte #2, Camille Giuliodibari #2, Barb Nilsen #15, Betty Sharps #18, and Suzanne Fazzio #8. Great scores, ladies! Chips-ins are where the money is to be found. Congratulations to Vivian Brown (twice!) #2 and #18, Vicki Krattli #9, Betty Sharps #8, Kitty Ohtaka #10, Suzanne Fazzio #8. All the sweeps are posted in the Scoreboard section of this newspaper. Next week is Captain’s Trophy. Vicki Krattli is giving us a rules challenge each week. Dianne Doughty introduced a new member joining us from Silver Creek Country Club. A rousing welcome to Neda Dorjath.

On Deck

Ringer: Signups began today. This is an individual eclectic tournament that the Pro Shop runs. Pay $5 to Camille G, and record your gross score on your scorecard as usual. At the end of the year, we’ll see who’s the low net. This is a flighted and handicapped fun tournament running between February through November. Your scores do not count toward your winning score until Camille has your 5 bucks, so pay up! Scores are recorded for all Captain’s Trophy and usual sweeps days, but not for guest days, special tournament and team play. See Camille for more information. Don’t miss out.

Partnership Eclectic: Signups begin February 6. This is a team tournament over the course of the golfing season from April to the end of November. Get a partner, check out the rules sheet on the website, and in the posting room. The cost is $10 for the team. Fill out the envelopes and registration sheet next week. A ton of fun. For questions, contact Loanne Rube or Geri Wilk.

Team Play: Our three captains are taking signups for team play. Lower handicappers play with Mid Peninsula under Janis LeCompte, mid handicappers play with Silicon Valley League under Judy Owen, and higher handicappers play in the Valley league under Gloria Landry. See the formats in the posting room or talk to one of the captains to sign up. This is a great way to play other private courses, enjoy meeting new friends and challenge your game in a match play set up. We want a full slate of team members in each league. Come join us!
