On a pleasant September evening, members of The Villages Democratic Club and guests gathered at the Vineyard Center for an engaging discussion with Council Member Domingo Candelas. Appointed in 2022 to fill a vacancy on the 10-member council, this marked Domingo’s first run for election to the seat.

As he welcomed attendees at the door, Domingo addressed many by name, showcasing his personality and effort to connect with his constituents.

For some attendees, the intricacies of local government were not entirely clear. However, Domingo’s unscripted presentation and openness to a wide range of questions provided valuable insights into how the council—and he, as a member—works to improve life in greater San Jose.

The audience raised questions on various topics, including street lamp replacements, pothole repairs, and neighborhood issues such as the dangers of sideshows, alongside the more complex challenge of addressing homelessness.

Domingo highlighted the top three public concerns that he is actively addressing: increasing police staffing, cleaning up streets and parks, and tackling the housing crisis.

A standout moment of the evening was Domingo’s anecdote about a ride in a police helicopter. He illustrated how technology aids the understaffed police department by enabling officers to read license plates from the air and identify suspect vehicles using a database.

The audience seemed impressed by Domingo’s thoughtful responses, which addressed concerns ranging from conservation efforts to fostering small business activity, aimed at enhancing local community spirit. The event helped improve our understanding local government and its vital role in our community.
