Attention Retired Military and Spouses: Learn about your veterans’ home care and other health benefits now

By Barbara F. Zahner, VMA Health Education Coordinator

Did you or your spouse serve in the United States Armed Forces? If so, sign up today for “Know Your Retired Veteran and Spousal Rights” workshop, Wednesday, June 4 in the Sequoia Room from 11 a.m. to noon.

Darlyn Escalante, Director of the Santa Clara Veteran Service Organization and an Air Force Veteran will be the presenter. Determine if you, as a retired service member, are eligible for benefits to help with home health care, prescriptions, hospitalization, and burial. Moreover, as the survivor of a service member, you may also be eligible for financial and other benefits. The best time to find out about these benefits is when you are calm, unhurried, and not in need.

In her one-hour presentation, Darlyn plans to cover:

• What is the Santa Clara County Veteran Service Organization (SCCVSO), and how does it differ from the Veterans Administration (VA).

• Services provided by the Veterans Service Organization

• Benefits to which you are entitled as a retired military veteran

• Survivor benefits to which your spouse is entitled

Presenter Darlyn Escalante is Director of the Santa Clara County Office of Veterans Services. Darlyn served in the United States Air Force. She is nationally accredited to assist veterans and their families in obtaining their benefits through federal, state and local organizations. As a veteran herself, Darlyn knows the importance of knowing and using the benefits veterans and their spouse earned serving their country. The Veterans Service Organization notes: “We value our time in the community to meet our veterans, their spouses, and  their families. We want to answer your questions, so you are prepared for the future. In short, we want you to receive the benefits to which you are entitled. You served our country. Now we hope to serve you during critical times in your life.”

The best time to understand your veteran benefits is in a familiar setting, in which you can comfortably  ask questions and take notes. On June 4 as a retired veteran or the wife of a retired vet, you will have that opportunity. Yes, you may bring a family member to the presentation. Sign up now. Space is limited to 40, so reserve your spot now.
