EPC: Drilling for Safety’s Sake

By Arlene Versaw

Just like your birthday, the holidays and income tax time, the EPC drill returns each year, usually in October. The emergency preparedness drill is hardly as festive as the holidays or as celebratory as your birthday. But it also is not as taxing as facing the April 15 deadline, because YOUR role in this drill requires a mere couple of minutes—yet is nonetheless critical.

Here’s what it takes. Since you already know where your OK sign is (right?), pull it out and post it in a window that can be seen from the street—and take it down when the drill is over. No window facing the street at your house?  No problem. Improvise. Post it on your garage door, for example.

Although that is not a lot to ask, it is the crux of the drill because the Villagers who volunteer for EPC and serve as Area Reps will need to identify who needs help in a real emergency and the annual drill is a test of the EPC’s preparedness to do that. So do your part, will you?

This year’s Emergency Preparedness Drill is Monday, October 21. And if you don’t know where your OK sign is, you can print one from the EPC website at: http://thevillagesepc.com.
