On Saturday, May 10, the Tennis Club held their annual Scholarship Tournament. This was the 21st year for the scholarship tournament to raise funds for scholarships for Silver Creek High School tennis team seniors.
This year the Tennis Club awarded four $5,000 scholarships to two boys and two girls. To qualify, they must have played for two years on their tennis team, have a 3.5 grade point average and write an essay talking about how tennis has impacted their lives. Then the school chooses the winners.
Jim Ferguson was the tournament director. The format was a handicap schedule with the men playing at 8:30 a.m. and the women at 10:30 a.m. Jay Desai was the top scorer for the men and the women had a four-way tie: Karen Hillis, Nancy Spisar, Lin Dickson and Shirley Mariani. Each received a new can of balls.
A delicious lunch was served by Nancy Domingo and Michael Castle. While everyone was enjoying the lunch, Mike Tuft introduced three of the four scholarship recipients, and asked them to draw names out of a container for four winners, each receiving a $25 certificate for the clubhouse.
And lastly Mike and Gail honored Wendy and Jim Ferguson, retiring chairman for the scholarship fund, with a lovely bouquet of flowers and many thanks for their 21 years of hard work.
