Join community connection and healing through Village Voices’ ‘A Winter Spectacular’
Music, a universal language crosses barriers and connects people. “A Winter Spectacular,” to be held December 7 and 8 in Cribari Auditorium, will be the Village Voices community celebration. The Village Voices is comprised of members whose communities of origin spread across the globe. Sara English, a 10-year member of the Alto section and Social Committee Chairperson, has Appalachian roots. In September, Sara’s Appalachian hometown was devastated by Hurricane Helene. For Sara, one of this year’s Voices songs, “I Wonder as I Wander,” offers her a healing connection from The Villages of San Jose to her Appalachian home.
Sara remembers her mother playing “I Wonder As I Wander” on the piano every Christmastime. Sara loves the minor key of the Appalachian carol, with its almost haunting melody. According to Sara, “If you’ve ever ‘wandered’ outside on a winter night and looked up at the sky, perhaps you’ve felt the awesomeness and wonder of the universe.” For Sara, singing this carol is a way to share her Appalachian culture with her Villages community. Its evocative melody helps heal Sara’s broken heart, knowing that this carol connects us with the Appalachian people. They are not alone.
