Catholic – ‘Kindness and Generosity’

By Patricia Galli and Leona Karayan

In this month we move our focus from the infant Jesus to the adult. We notice that he becomes engaged in the larger community. His baptism moves him into the public arena. He begins to become a person of transformation. We too as we begin to understand God’s mercy to us can start to reach out to help others receive this gift.

The Villages Catholic Community is actively engaged in outreach in San Jose.

We call this outreach—ministry. One of the places we are connected to is Las Casitas (little house). Las Casitas is part of Amigos de Guadalupe Center for Justice and Empowerment. Founded in 2012, Amigos, a non-profit organization, envisions a just and equitable society for East San Jose and Mayfair communities. With focus on housing, immigration services, education, mental health and advocacy, Amigos aims to empower individuals who are in need. This includes housing, tutoring, scholarships, job counseling, citizenship classes and much more.

Las Casitas—Behind the old city hall on First Street, there are about 25 “little houses” that each accommodate a family. They have beds and room for personal items. On the property there are separate trucks that contain showers, lavatories and laundry facilities. There is also a communal kitchen and dining area. Some of the residents have planted a vegetable garden, that includes a “water feature.” This is in a secured area with parking on the outside.

In the last year we have given 10 families gift cards for Target as they transition from Las Casitas to more permanent housing. If you wish to donate, please contact Leona Karayan at 408-223-2325.
