Meet Sherry Benz, Pickleball Club Treasurer

Pickleball Sherry Benz

I moved to The Villages in 2007 and rented a condo in Cribari. This was at the end of my two-career life—25 years as a physical therapist and 18 years as a commercial property manager. My friend, and future husband Dennis Cullen, also rented in Cribari. Lo’ and behold, as things happen in The Villages, we were married in 2009 and moved to our home in Olivas.

I had mutual friends through tennis and, when I moved to The Villages, they welcomed me warmly. Tennis had been my primary sport with well over 450 USTA matches under my belt…at least until I met Pickleball. I will never forget my first attempt during one of the exhibitions and the countless “whiffs” that I made. But, I kept at it and now I love the sport. Tennis is still an important sport and I play 2-3 times a week, trying not to get the two sports mixed up.

The Pickleball Club is made up of some remarkable people, those who you just want to spend time with. I love seeing players improving their skills over time (makes it a challenge to keep up)! The friendships and laughter have kept my therapy bills to a minimum!

My favorite shot that I can effectively hit is a volley. My favorite shot that I cannot effectively hit is a “dink,” but there is no better cure than practice.

I served as tournament director along with Michelle McQuay for two years and wanted to continue serving, so I volunteered to be the treasurer. It’s an easy job for me and keeps me involved.

“Life is good; pickleball makes it better.”
