Please join The Villages Music Society’s Opera Lovers on Thursday, April 17 at 2 p.m. in Montgomery Center, when we will present “The Barber of Seville” aka “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” by Gioachino Rossini.
Rossini was a prolific opera composer, but undoubtedly the most popular is “The Barber of Seville,” because it is thoroughly entertaining. This is comic opera at its best where everyone, including the antagonist, ends up smiling and singing together!
The music requires every voice to be capable of rapid-fire singing and effortless agility. The score features one catchy melody after another, starting with Figaro’s (the barber) opening aria that even first-time opera goers will know from popular culture. So, leave all your cares at home and prepare to be humming the tunes from this hilarious favorite as you return home!
Briefly, the plot revolves around Count Almaviva’s efforts to woo Rosina, and all the hurdles he faces are great fun to watch. While the opera is sung in Italian, our English subtitles will reveal all. This production runs three hours, but the time will fly by and we will take our usual quick break about halfway through the afternoon.
