Martin Hoek finishes on top of Pinseekers leader board

By Jim White

This has been a rough winter to get the Pinseekers out to the golf course. Of the 10 Fridays since Christmas we have only had a full field for competition on four of those days. Not that a couple of the other Fridays weren’t playable, but the actual days of Atmospheric Rivers added to the days that the weather warnings scared away many of our players, keeping our play very limited. This is the third season that we have not had what we typically expect in our San Jose winter.

We have managed to get enough members to the tee box on the last two Fridays of February to reclaim most of our tee slots and resume hitting that little white (or yellow, or orange, or green) ball down the fairway and eventually watch it fall into the cup.

On February 21, our leader board finished with Martin Hoek on top with a Net 35; second spot was snatched by Jack Bindon at net four strokes over par; Mario Silva and Richard Henderson tied for the third position with a net five strokes over par.

On February 28, as a definite change in the weather made sweaters and coats sit in the back of our carts, our top finisher was Will Ector at two under par for a Net 34; coming in second at a net two strokes over par, Richard Henderson; and, for the second consecutive week, a two-man tie for the third spot, Mario Silva and Mike Falarski each posted a net three over par. This day was a special treat for us as, with the bunker rehabilitation project passing the halfway point, we played for the first time on the Front Nine since before Thanksgiving. Also, as a group, our gross scores dropped from a group average of 55 strokes on February 21, to a group average of 50 on February 28. Considering a group playing handicap average of 14. As the weather continues to improve, let’s hope our handicaps do the same.

Once again, we invite all Villager men to join us on a Friday afternoon for nine holes of a game that we love. If you want to join us contact Jim White at whit3744@pacbell.net. While we take our play seriously, the prime objective of our golf outings is to hit it straight, avoid three putts, as best you can, and have fun!
