Remembering the Tennis Club’s Calendar Girls—20 years later!

Well, it is time for “Memory Lane” again and this time it is 20 years ago 2005! The 3.5 Ladies USTA Tennis Team decided to make a calendar based on a recent movie “Calendar Girls.” Nine ladies from the team volunteered to enter this project that took 10 months to complete. We wanted it to be for Christmas presents and it was done in October! Each member was obligated to sell 10 calendars to cover expenses and make a profit. We re-ordered twice and made a profit of $1000!

Deciding who we would give our profit to was a bit of a problem. We first voted on a popular Villages program but they told us they would take the money but didn’t want their name on our calendar. We decided not to go with them and picked our new project the Silver Creek High School Scholarship fund. Wendy Ferguson has chaired this project for years. 

Our big problem was getting someone to print our calendar at a reasonable cost. We finally found the perfect place on Capitol Expressway where a couple were just setting up a UPS franchise and helped us with a great deal.

Each member picked a month and took their own photo. The committee made sure the photo was a bit risqué but there is not much to worry about with 60-ish tennis ladies. Sally Schauer used two small turkeys for her props and we decided to eat them and have a pre-Thanksgiving feast!

Our men also helped us out with photos. Hal Gillette, Jim Ferguson and Gene Gerwe were always ready with the group photos. Bear in mind, none of us had any skills in computers, graphic arts but we did know how to play tennis. We have lost three members of this group but you can bet we will be celebrating our 20 years in 2025!
