When one thinks of technology, it’s generally with an eye to the future. Where will technology take us next? But what if technology can help us look backward to days gone by, to yesteryear, to a fading memory of our past? What if it has political implications? And what is its role in our current lives can be explained?
Fortunately, it can. Professor Lawrence Quill, of the Political Science Department at San Jose State University, will explain how. In this Senior Academy lecture. Professor Quill, who has written a book, “Nostalgia and Political Theory,” considers the importance of nostalgia to political history. He will examine the role of nostalgia in the ancient and modern world by considering how “the past,” or the Golden Age, has influenced self and societal understanding.
He’ll address whether current worldwide nationalist/populist movements are tied to nostalgia and whether we should be concerned. And he will explain how technologies like television, radio, film, the portable camera, radio, and now, social media, have given new life to nostalgia.
An unusual topic, yes? Join Senior Academy at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11 at Foothill Center. Reserve your spot on our website at https://www.VillagesSA.org.
