Sign up for Senior Academy: ‘Islam: An Enigma No More’

By Arlene Versaw

Allah. Muhammad. The Koran. Components of Islam, the second-largest religion in the world after Christianity. A religion whose various interpretations have wrought discord, whose most radical interpretations threaten, but a religion whose secular branches embrace much in common with Christianity and Judaism.

The Senior Academy is pleased to bring you a lecture by Farid Senzai, on Sunday, October 20 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Foothill Center. Please note the time and date, which are a departure from our regular presentations.

Mr. Senzai will share with us some of the basic tenets of Islam, its origin and its history. He will also cover the distinct types of Islam, how they came about, why they still exist today and the conflict they present.

As with most religions there are many different interpretations of the Koran, the sacred book of Islam. It is the more radical interpretation that we find threatening, rather than the more secular branches, whose adherents only want to practice what they believe to be their truth. The result of the radical extremism has brought havoc and more currently, war. Mr. Senzai will address this war without judgment, which should give us a better understanding of the current situation.

Farid Senzai is an associate professor of Political Science at Santa Clara University. He is the founder and current president of the first non-partisan American think tank working exclusively on issues where U.S. foreign policy and Muslim geopolitics intersect. In addition, he is a co-founder and Director of Research at Institute for Social Policy.
