Even if you claim the standard deduction on your Federal return you may want to take an itemized deduction on your California return. Many taxpayers do this to reduce their state tax liability.
If you file single for 2024, the standard deduction on your Federal return is $14,600 or $16,550 if you are age 65 or older. If you file a joint return, the Federal standard deduction is $29,200, $30,750 if one of you is age 65, or $32,300 if both of you are age 65. However, the California standard deduction is only $5,540 if you file single and $11,080 if you file jointly.
When you use The Villages AARP TaxAide service, the system automatically carries your deductible items over to your state return. If you are uncertain as to whether your deductions will give you an advantage on your California return, bring the information with you to your appointment. The tax preparers will work with you to get the best result. Appointments are available at Foothill on Thursday mornings February 6 through April 11. Call the Evergreen Community Center at 408-270-2220 to make an appointment.
Computerized tax programs that you use yourself, such as TurboTax, TaxSlayer, or H&R Block, will also automatically do the calculations and prepare the correct forms.
