Staying safe in the summer heat

As temperatures climb, it’s important to keep safety top of mind while enjoying the summer season. Here are a few friendly reminders to help you stay cool, healthy, and prepared:

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Keep a bottle nearby while walking, golfing, or gardening. Avoid excess caffeine or alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.

2. Plan around peak heat
Try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon. Midday (between 11 AM and 3 PM) is often the hottest; use that time to rest indoors, run errands in air-conditioned spaces, or relax in the shade.

3. Dress smart & use sunscreen
Wear light, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) before heading out and reapply as needed, especially to often-forgotten areas like your ears, neck, and hands.

4. Keep indoor spaces cool
Close blinds or curtains during the day, especially on sun-facing windows. Use fans or air conditioning to circulate air and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

5. Check in on neighbors
A simple call or quick visit to a neighbor, especially someone living alone, can help ensure they’re staying safe and cool. Community care makes all the difference.

6. Never leave people or pets in parked cars
Even a few minutes can be dangerous. Temperatures inside a vehicle rise rapidly, posing a serious risk to loved ones and animals.

Remember: a little preparation goes a long way. Take care of yourself and look out for your neighbors this season. Let’s enjoy the sunshine safely, together.
