Storms in our lives seem to come out of nowhere. There are times when you may see a storm approaching, and you may have time to prepare for it. Other times, they come with no apparent signs or warnings unless you are one of those whose bones ache. Some people retire from work, anticipating continued good health to enjoy their long-awaited retirement, and to their surprise, the doctors discover a significant health problem, dashing their plans.
If there was ever a time in life when we witnessed the presence of unexpected storms, it’s now. But remember, we are not powerless in the face of these storms. Our resilience, our ability to bounce back, is a powerful tool in our arsenal!
Storms in life have a way of changing our direction, but we always hope that there will be a brighter day beyond the veil. I can testify that things in life can work for our good, even when we don’t understand why the storm came at such a time. Sometimes, we must slow down and reevaluate what is essential in our lives with eternity in view.
As an ex-serviceman in the United States Navy, aboard an aircraft carrier, I have experienced some significant storms in life. The ship went side to side and up and down as the waves of the sea came crashing over the flight deck. Though the journey was tempestuous, the captain knew there was a destination to reach and how best to get there.
In recent years, I survived a heart transplant surgery, with the captain of my soul knowing that He needed me to be around, to ensure others of their eternal security, before I reached my final destination.
In times of storms, I find these words most comforting: “For I know the thoughts that I think to ward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
