Episcopal: ‘They are still with us’

By The Rev. Joel P. Miller

I once had a bishop who told the congregation where I was serving at the time: “The only thing that doesn’t change is change itself.” Life is full of changes and transitions, isn’t it? Nobody said, “amen,” in the congregation, but intuitively we all knew how true his words were. By the way, just so you know we Episcopalians are a welcoming but quiet bunch and we aren’t known for saying amen when someone is preaching even when the bishop comes for a visit. All Saints Sunday is a time when we recognize and celebrate one of the biggest transitions and changes in our lives: the passing of our beloved departed. Though they are departed we probably all also intuitively know that they are still with us—just with us in a different way. We would love you to join us and bring a photo or memento of your beloved departed as we recognize and celebrate their lives on November 10 at the Montgomery Center. We will set up an altar with all the photos and mementos for all those that we love but see no longer. Please note that we have changed the date for All Saints Sunday from November 3 to November 10, and of course we will sing:

For all the saints who from their labors rest,

Who thee by faith before the world confessed,

Thy Name O Jesus, be for ever blessed.

Alleluia, Alleluia

We sing knowing that all our beloved departed are created, energized and sanctified by the Holy Spirit, making them each saints. Please don’t hesitate to bring a photo or a memento.

Join us at the Montgomery Center at 9 a.m. on November 10.
