Villages Table Tennis Club holds ‘Smash Into Summer’ Open Day

On Saturday, June 1, the Table Tennis Club had exhibition matches between the top three players. Instead of the normal setup with two tables, one table was moved to the center so there would be plenty of room for retrieving smashes. About 40 people came to watch. Matches were 3 out of 5 games.

Ric Yalung defeated Xianjin Zhang in straight games, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-3.

Ric then defeated Paul Spisar 11-3, 18-16, 13-11.  They were in deuce seven times in game 2 and twice in game 3.

Paul Spisar then beat Xianjin Zhang 11-9, 4-11, 11-8, 11-7.

Table tennis is a game that you can play for life.  Among old-timers watching were former club champions Jan Kiernan (Women 2003, 2007, 2010), Art Lind (Men 2003), Alan Waltho (Men 2004, 2006), Gary Margoles (Men 2008, 2009).

The big event approaching is a tournament on August 2 at Rossmoor.

After the exhibition everyone went to get hot hors d’oeuvres.
