The Villages Medical Auxiliary (VMA) invites you to learn about dementia from Maria Nicolacoudis, CEO of Hearts and Mind Activity Center on Tuesday, January 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Vineyard Center. The topic is timely. In a recent study, Columbia University researchers found almost 10 percent of U.S. adults ages 65 and older have dementia, while another 22 percent have mild cognitive impairment. Behind these statistics are the faces of people we know, families who care, and friends who may wonder, “Who would be there for me if I experience dementia?”
In her one-hour presentation Maria will cover:
• Definition of Dementia
• Eight types of Dementia
• Caregiving for those with Dementia, including safety, communication, and accepting help
• Engagement with family and friends
• Access to an intergenerational model of care
A highly regarded expert in non-profit leadership, Maria holds an M.A. from Santa Clara University in Counseling Psychology. In addition to professional experience in the field of dementia, Maria also has familial understanding: her brother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2016. If fear of developing dementia pulls you down, if you are caring for a family member with dementia, if you are diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, come learn how to find sound ground in the midst of a changing reality.
