As I was growing up, I would hear older people talking about arthritis and I wondered, “What exactly is arthritis?” I have undoubtedly reached the stage of being an older person, as today, I don’t have to ponder that question anymore because “Uncle Art” has taken up residency on my left foot and I can’t give him an eviction notice.
Some years ago, I developed arthritis in my left foot from a fall, caring for one of my sisters who had to have brain surgery after a bad fall. There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not reminded of the accident because of some discomfort. Having a pain-free day is fantastic whenever it happens!
People my age and older are grateful for a pain-free day or week. I never dreamed that having a pain-free day would be something that I would ever hope for, but this is the reality for many of us today.
Life is a great teacher; as we see what happens to others, we realize this could happen to anyone. You are taught to have compassion for others in a way that will never be forgotten, especially when you share the same afflictions or similar infirmities. When you observe someone who is physically challenged, and your heart goes out to them, take a moment to say a little prayer for their well-being.
Someone’s infirmity today can be yours tomorrow, so take each day that you have been given and appreciate the abilities you have, whether full or limited. Let’s be a blessing to each other. “Think of how we regard, as blessed, those who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance, and you have seen the Lord’s purpose, that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” James 5:11 NET
