There are people you meet who appear to be happy all the time. Their smiles seem to light up the room, and if you are having a challenging day, you begin to think less of your situation. To look at them, you would never realize they are under duress because of their health, family, or the grief of a loved one.
By observation only, you would never know the pain that has helped shape their lives and given them a reason to look at life differently than the average person. We may meet them on the golf course, in the bistro, at the market, or even at a church service. If you ask them what their secret and positive attitude is, the answer would be that they are happy just to be alive.
Let’s not forget others who seem to be living life constantly looking in the rearview mirror and seldom looking for reasons to approach life on the upside. Perhaps you have met or know someone who is struggling to get a handle on life’s challenges. They stand out wherever they go because the weight of their struggles is written on their face. We understand that living in a broken world, we will sometimes face tremendous challenges.
While the cost of kindness is never devalued, there are always opportunities to be kind. Kindness is a spiritual discipline; we are never left alone without a chance to be kind to someone.
One day, while sitting in the Bistro, a lady struggled to put her arm into her coat sleeve while talking to the gentleman with her, trying to get his walker. A person near them went over to help her with her coat. Shocked and pleasantly surprised, she turned around, smiled, and said, “Thanks.”
You and I can help others see the light at the end of the tunnel by taking advantage of opportunities to be kind. After all, the day may come when you need kindness from others.
Ephesians 4:32 TLB: “Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you because you belong to Christ.”
